The Department of Women Development was created by redeploying a few officers and staff from the erstwhile Social Security & Welfare Dept. during 2003-04. Initially the Department was named Women Welfare. The name was subsequently changed to ‘Women Development’ due to a paradigm shift in world and national ideology that women were no longer subjects of welfare but of development.
