About the Department

With the mandate to “Strive towards economic empowerment of women in Nagaland”, Government of Nagaland created the Department of Women Resource Development during 2003 to implement the following broad outline of activities:

    • Awareness Generation and Capacity Building
    • Training & Skill Upgradation
    • Promotion of Rural & Urban Entrepreneurship
    • Livelihood Support Intervention
    • Training, Marketing, Support & Linkage
    • Any other women-centric socio-economic development & upliftment

In line with the Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality, the Department has been carrying out multiple initiatives to improve the socio-economic status of women as well as provide support services to mainstream and balance the gender divide, uplift women, and facilitate their self-dependency.

To implement district level programmes and activities, the Department has formed partnership with the apex women bodies in all the districts and sub-divisions since these bodies are well connected to the villages through their own village-level units. This partnership has been put into place soon after the total bifurcation of this Department from the erstwhile Department of Social Security & Welfare in 2006. The women organizations are referred to as the Partner NGOs of the Department.

The mandate of the Department to empower women is based on the foundation of upliftment through the promotion and propagation of entrepreneurship and businesses for individual women, and skill development and up-gradation for women cultivators, artisans, artistes, etc with market tie-ups that will result in improved income and livelihoods, ultimately leading to betterment of their socio-economic status in the society.
